ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE
The (GIL) was founded in 1961 under the Ministry of Education by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of the Republic of Ghana. The Institute was affiliated with the President’s Office by Presidential Decree of Incorporation in 1963.
The National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD 324), which replaced Legislative Instrument 114, provided the Institute the status of an autonomous Body Corporate with a Board of Management selected by the Commissioner for Education, Culture, and Sports. It was eventually handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Institute is currently overseen by the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), which is part of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports. The Institute was founded with the aim to foster Pan-Africanism and friendly connections between Ghanaians and foreigners through teaching foreign languages.
